A Lightweight, Off-season Skimo Training Ski
What is Ski Mountaineer?

Ski Mountaineering combines uphill climbing on skis, bootpacking (carrying skis while hiking), and fast downhill skiing.
Sprint Race
Vertical Race
Individual Race
Team Race
Athletes race over mountainous using climbing skins for grip during ascents, carry skis during steep sections, a further ascent on skis and then ski downhill to finish as quickly as possible.
The main objective is to complete the full course in the shortest time, efficiently managing transitions between climbing, hiking, and skiing.

Approximately 70% of the race time is spent on the uphill section, while the downhill portion has minimal impact on rankings.

Problem Statement

Ski mountaineering athletes lack effective off-season training tools that simulate real uphill movement and muscle engagement, making it difficult to build strength and technique outside snow conditions.

Analysis of the uphill sliding motion showed that most of the force is concentrated on the heel, while the toes and the wheels at both ends provide support and directional guidance. Based on this finding, the ratchet was positioned at the heel to maximize performance and efficiency.
